Day one cycling from Faro to Alicante. Portugal greeted me with perfect cycling weather, not to hot, even a bit of drizzle now and then and a strong tail wind all the way. After a brief visit at the beach and an hour looking at the Old Town I start off on the road.

The Eurovelo 1 is very much mixed terrain, from excellent cycling lanes, to newly built gravel paths to, well, a missing bridge or two. Overall a very nice mostly flat 80 km section from Faro to Villa Real de Santos on the border to Spain.

A short ferry ride brings me over the border to Spain. The road quality seems to go down immediately, but perhaps that’s only because I don’t follow EV1 any more. I ride through the endless farms where anything from Oranges to Avocado is grown.

130 km is a good tally for the first day.
