After a pleasant 5h train journey to Locarno, I arrive in the Ticono summer heat. The sun is burning down hard and so I’m glad that the steep hike up to Capanna Cimetta leads though the forest most of the way.

I hike up a pilgrim path which starts with a lot of small stairways through Locarno and goes up to San Bernado, just a few houses on the mountainside.

A light breeze cools me down slightly on the second half of my 1500 m ascent. I enjoy the beautiful view on Lago Maggiore and the surrounding mountains.

Capanna Cimetta is less of a mountain hut than a restaurant with a few rooms. Despite the weekend I’m alone with a nice Swiss couple and their dog. We end up talking all evening while we enjoy the beautiful view.
