Day 2 and the fine drizzle hasn’t let up. Even though the weather radar shows no rain, I’m still getting wet. The uphill from Gérardmer is mercifully short and the downhill brings me away from the clouds and into the lower Vosges region.

Soon, I ride along the voie Verte, a cycling path built along an old railway track, so it’s pretty straight and level.

In Remiremont it’s time for a visit to the boulangerie. Fresh baguette is enough reason for being in France. Riding through small villages, I pass a local road race in Xertigny I stop for a lunch break in the park near the city hall.

Having originally planned to pass by the town of Vittel, home to the mineral water, I find myself running out of water. Disappointingly, none of the villages that I pass through have and active fountain, so I take the detour to the town. Again, I’m very disappointed that there appears to be only one free source of water provided by the town. At least it’s apparently original Vittel mineral water.
