The morning is partially sunny and I soon arrive at legendary Doune Castle, backdrop for more than one famous medieval film scene. It has also played an important part in Scotlands history, as the audio guide, beautifully narrated by Terry Jones, explains.

‘You don’t frighten us, English pig dogs!’

On the way from Doune to Dunfermline, a straight cycle path built along an old railway line, it starts raining.

In contrast to the quick West Coast showers, it doesn’t stop after half an hour, but continues mostly unabated until I reach the outskirts of Edinburgh.

After dropping my things at the AirBnB, I venture into the city. Starting up Holyrood Park, which begins right out the door, I get a nice evening view over the city.

I end up in the Jazz Bar, where first a mediocre jazz guitarist plays, then a much better young 11-person band, who are having quite some fun.
