(note: title stolen from an amazing comic)
Starting with the sunrise at six, the road is all but empty. Around nine, traffic picks up a bit but doesn’t get too annoying.
I pass through Charleston and head on towards Westport not entering the town, though. Instead I go to Cartes Beach (some more old cars here) where I spend three hours at the beach enjoying sun and sea.
I leave Westport and with it the West Coast around two and head east into the mountains.
Inangahua Junction is the hard to pronounce name of my goal for the day. When I arrive around five, I find the backpacker hostel / campground directly by the road and decide to continue for another 15 km to Lyell. This former gold town is now vanished and its site a DoC campground.
