The morning starts damp, but not quite raining, and as I ride north along the Jura I see the dark clouds gathering above the mountains. The east looks sunnier and I decide to follow the Rhone on the Via Rhona cycle way to Lyon.

The way into the city is easy along the canals and the Grand Parc de Miribel in the northeast and then I follow the bend of the river on excellent cycle paths all the way as it turns south. At the south end of what you’d probably call the inner city the cycling infrastructure has a slight hiccup, though. The via Rhona is now an ‘interesting’ mix of temporary and permanent deviations for the next 15 kilometers. Sometimes they’re quite nice to ride, at least if you have the right bike, but I’m not quite sure, if the average road or city cyclist is quite happy on single trails…

After this experience, the normal cyclelway along the Rhone resumes and i, apart from a few deviations, excellently built. The weather is perfect, too, not too hot and some light clouds. I progress quickly and end the day just before Montélimar after eating up 250 km.
