I stary early to escape the heat – the night was very warm –  and ride further along the ex-railway, now-cycleway. I pass through a series of short tunnels, in all of which the lights aren’t working, and emerge beyond the pass. The last part on the cycleway leads me to Campotenese, a small gathering of houses, where preparations for the Mountainbike Marathon Aragonesi are taking place. Let’s just say I don’t quite fit in with the styled italian hobby racers.

Onwards I ride, up the next hill and down towards the villages of  Rotonda, Viggianello and Cropani, where the number of hikers and roadside food stands makes me realise that it’s sunday. I stop for lunch, then continue on small roads up and down until I reach the Agri river. This I follow upstream to the Lago del Pertusillo, where I make camp.
