I follow the river towards the sea, first the smaller Guadaira, then the mighty Guadalquivir. Both are muddy and unappealing but the local bird population seem to like it. Flamingos, herons and other long-legged birds stalk the flat lakes along the road and storks have occupied almost every power pole and house roof. Plus a few trees.

The further I get towards the sea, the more the wind picks up and the flat landscape offers little protection. But the roads are good and the sun is shining hotly. As I turn southwards, just before the river mouth, I reach a wonderful pine forest park. Here, someone had the fantastic idea of building a super smooth concrete road for cyclists and wheelchairs. It’s very relaxing after half a day of gravel.

After a short grocery stop in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, I follow a fantastic bicycle path to Costa Ballena and then continue to El Puerto de Santa Maria.

I end my day after another 130 km of riding on the beach in view of Cadiz, watching the sunset.
